Trade show giveaways people actually keep
Most booth merch is forgotten by the drive home. Here's how to choose something that ends up on a desk, in a bag or on a keyring for years.
- Pick things people use daily: drinkware, chargers, bags.
- A good design beats a big logo.
- Order 2–6 months ahead for custom pieces.
Why most giveaways get tossed
A giveaway earns its cost every time someone uses it. A pen that runs dry in a week gets one impression. A bottle that rides in a bag every day gets thousands. The difference usually comes down to usefulness and design, not price.
Items get thrown away when they're flimsy, when they don't fit into the person's day, or when they look like an ad rather than a thing.
The keep test
Before you order, run every idea through four questions:
- Would they buy it themselves? If not, it's clutter.
- Will they use it weekly? Daily-use items stay visible.
- Does it fit their day? A charger for travelers, a notebook for planners, a bottle for everyone.
- Would they be happy to be seen with it? Design decides this one.
Ideas by audience
- Tech and developer events: power banks, quality notebooks, cable organizers, well-designed tees.
- Healthcare and science: insulated bottles, tote bags, desk items, a playful custom piece like a lab-coat rubber duck.
- Universities and students: keychains, lip balm, jumbo highlighters, notebooks, collectible figures.
- Enterprise buyers: premium drinkware, tech accessories, curated gift boxes.
Ideas by budget
Budget-friendly: pick a smaller item and make it great. Custom keychains, lip balm and stickers can feel special when the design is good.
Mid-range: the everyday heroes, like bottles, totes, notebooks and caps.
Premium: power banks, speakers, hoodies and gift boxes, usually reserved for qualified conversations rather than every passer-by.
Make the design the reason to keep it
The design is what turns a product into something people want. Choose colors that work with your brand, place the logo thoughtfully and consider a line or illustration people would actually wear or display. Free mockups let you compare options before anything is produced.
Timing your order
Good merch needs lead time. Plan on 2–6 months for custom pieces. The more custom the product, the earlier you should start. See how far ahead to order.
