Custom vs. stock: which promo products fit your booth
When an off-the-shelf item is fine, and when a custom piece is worth the extra lead time.
- Stock items with your logo are faster and simpler.
- Custom pieces stand out and get remembered.
- Many great projects mix both.
What "stock" and "custom" mean
Stock products already exist, like a standard bottle, tote or cap, and get decorated with your logo. Custom products are designed for you: a unique shape, a custom mold, a figure or a product that doesn't exist until you make it.
When stock is the right call
- Your show is soon and timing is tight.
- You need a reliable everyday item in larger quantities.
- The design and color choices can make it feel like yours.
When custom is worth it
- You want people to talk about your booth.
- Your brand has a character, mascot or idea that can become an object.
- You're building something people collect or come back for.
A lab-coat rubber duck for a science-focused booth or custom minifigures of a college's students are the kind of pieces nobody throws away.
The best of both
Many strong projects mix the two: a stock everyday item for everyone who stops by, plus a custom piece for the conversations that matter. It balances budget, lead time and impact.
How to decide
Ask three questions. How much time do we have? Who is this for? What do we want people to say afterwards? If the answer to the last one is "that was clever", it's probably custom.
